Around 3:00 AM on the 8th, we left the Beagle Channel and entered the Drake Passage. There was certainly no mistaking it! Thank goodness for the shipboard doctor and modern pharmaceuticals!
The next day the waters were considerably calmer and we crossed the line into Antarctica. We got our first view of the South Shetland Islands.
