It was on to Kizhi Island in Lake Onega, an outdoor museum preserve on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites, where the buildings are all made of wood without nails. The “ensemble” consists of the Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1714, its freestanding belfry, and another, smaller, church – the Intercession Church – which was used in winter because the bigger church could not be heated.
